One of the oldest forms of painting still in use today. Developed by ancient Greeks using hot wax and a binder. These days encaustic paintings use beeswax, resin and pigment to form remarkably sturdy paintings. Encaustic paintings do not yellow or darken with age due to a very low oil content. They can be susceptible to high heat so do not hang one over the stove.
Sometimes encaustic paintings will look dull after some time due to slight oxidation. This can be corrected by lightly buffing the painting with a clean dry cotton cloth. Really. Perfectly OK, its wax.
